The L’Oréal Brandstorm competition has long been a platform for young innovators to reimagine the future of beauty. In 2023, the competition embraced the theme “Crack the New Codes of Beauty,” challenging participants to leverage emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, the Metaverse, and Digital Collectibles to create groundbreaking solutions in beauty and tech. As a participant, I had the incredible opportunity to dive into this world of innovation, creativity, and collaboration.

About the Brandstorm Competition

Brandstorm is more than just a competition; it’s an immersive learning experience. Organized annually by L’Oréal, it invites teams of three from across the globe to present solutions that align with the brand’s vision of innovation and inclusivity in the beauty industry. With stages spanning local, regional, and global levels, the competition allows participants to pitch their ideas to industry leaders while gaining insights into the evolving intersection of beauty and technology.

This year, the stakes were high: finalists had the chance to pitch their concepts in Paris at the L’Oréal Headquarters, competing for mentorship and professional opportunities at one of the world’s leading beauty companies

Our Solution: Skintel

Our team set out to tackle a pressing issue in the beauty and skincare market: the widespread knowledge gap around effective skincare routines. Many consumers struggle to identify products and regimens suitable for their unique skin types, often resorting to trial-and-error methods that waste resources and yield poor results.

We introduced Skintel, a cutting-edge solution designed to revolutionize skincare routines through technology. Skintel is a miniature laser-powered device that uses advanced imaging to generate a 3D map of the skin’s surface. Paired with an intuitive app, it provides users with AI-driven skin analyses, tracks changes over time, and recommends tailored skincare regimens based on detailed insights into their skin’s needs.

This innovation aimed to not only simplify skincare but also empower users with precise, data-backed recommendations, addressing both the practical and educational gaps in the market.

Highlights of the Experience

While we didn’t make it to the international finals, becoming one of the top four national finalists in Sub-Saharan Africa was a significant milestone. This achievement validated our idea and showcased our ability to present a compelling vision amidst strong competition.

Participating in L’Oréal Brandstorm was a whirlwind of excitement and growth. From brainstorming and developing Skintel to pitching it before industry experts, every step was a learning experience. The competition pushed us to think creatively, work collaboratively, and adapt our ideas to a high-stakes environment.

Our project, Skintel, continues to inspire me to explore the possibilities at the intersection of technology and human needs.
